Congratulations, you have successfully completed your Open Water course and are now recognized as a certified diver around the world. If you would like to go diving but are not sure how to begin or perhaps you have been diving but would like to extend your scuba skills, then the Advanced Open Water course is for you. The ultimate in hands-on training to give you the extra confidence you need. In this course you will experience new diving environments under the supervision of your PADI instructor, with one classroom session.

You'll hone your skills by completing five adventure dives that introduce you to:

  • Underwater navigation
  • Deeper water diving (typically anywhere from 18-30 metres/ 60-100 feet)
  • An introduction to three more Adventure Dives of your choice

The Fun Part: Your Choice

One reason you'll love the Advanced Open Water Diver course is that you and your instructor choose from 15 types of Adventure Dives to complete your course. You can try your hand at Digital Underwater Photography, Wreck Diving, Night Diving, Search and Recovery and much more.

Prerequisites

To take this course, you must be:

A PADI Open Water Diver (or qualifying certification from another training organization)

15 years old (12 for Junior Advanced Open Water Diver with written consent of parent or guardian)

What You Learn

The knowledge and skills you get in the Advanced Open Water Diver course vary with your interest and the adventures you have, but include:

  • Practical aspects of deep diving
  • Physiological effects of deeper scuba diving.
  • More ways to use your underwater compass
  • How to navigate using kick-cycles, visual landmarks and time
  • How to better use your dive computer and electronic Recreational Dive PlannerTM (eRDPTM)
  • And much, much more, depending on the Adventure Dives you choose

The Scuba Gear You Use

You use all the basic scuba gear including your underwater compass. Depending on which three adventure dives you pick, you may also be introduced to underwater photography equipment, a dive light, lift bags, a dive flag/float or other specialty gear.

The Learning Materials You Need

PADI's Adventures in Diving Manual and DVD provide information on more than 15 types of specialty diving. You'll use them as a guidebook to improve your diving skills and prepare for new experiences and adventures. The eLearning option is available for Advanced open water.

Adventure Dives

Dry Suit Dive: Cold even in a wet suit? The dry suit elective will show you how to safely dive using the ultimate exposure protection, which will provide warmth in the most extreme environments. Complete a practice session in the pool using a Dry Suit and then do all 5 Advanced Open Water dives using a dry suit for an additional $100.00 (does not include undergarment).

Dry Suit Specialty Option: This option can be applied toward your earning the Dry Suit Specialty certification. Complete a practice session in the pool using a Dry Suit, and then complete the 5 Advanced Open Water dives using the dry suit plus 1 additional dry suit dive for the Dry Suit Specialty Certification $150. (Does not include undergarment).

Multi-Level Dive: Extend your bottom time safely using multi-level diving techniques which give you credit for shallower portions of your dive. Plan and execute a multi-level dive using the Wheel version of the Recreational Dive Planner. Theory and operation of dive computers will be covered. (Use of a dive computer during all 5 advanced Open Water dives is strongly recommended). Rental fee for a computer will be discounted 20 percent for this course.

Night Dive: Ever wonder what it’s like to dive at night? You’ll be amazed at the nocturnal marine creature present themselves to you during a night dive. Learn the fundamentals of night diving (as well as the etiquette of night diving) while being supervised by an instructor.

Peak Performance Buoyancy Dive: Improve and fine-tune your weighting and buoyancy control for better diving comfort and air consumption.

Search and Recovery Dive: Learn and practice search techniques for submerged objects. Students will practice using a lift bag to bring them safely to the surface.

Underwater Photography Dive: Learn how water affects the photographic process. Practice techniques for great photographs in the underwater world.

Wreck Dive: The Ocean is full of wrecks of all ages, shapes and sizes. Learn how to safely explore these treasures of the deep.

All Advanced Open Water dives may be counted toward the requirements for the equivalent specialty course.
